“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother…”
Henry V, Act IV, scene iii
In this week between the official and traditional days to celebrate Memorial Day, I’m reminded of all the heroic characters in Shakespeare’s plays, particularly of the stirring speech that King Henry V gives his troops before battle on St. Crispin’s Day. It’s from this speech we have the phrase, “band of brothers,” so often used now to describe American soldiers.
Memorial Day and the month of May mean so much to so many of us. We remember our own fallen heroes, but we also celebrate many of life’s happy occasions like weddings and graduations. We also rejoice in the unofficial start of summer. For us at DSF, the start of summer means getting into high gear for our season of performances at Rockwood Mansion Park. Rehearsals for Twelfth Night begin in a few weeks, and we remind you to go to our website to pick the best dates to come out and enjoy Shakespeare under the stars.
Happy Memorial Day, congratulations to all the brides, grooms and grads, and we’ll see you at Rockwood soon…
