Shakespeare Day in Rehoboth Beach

March 21, 2018 by David Stradley

CLICK HERE FOR VOLUNTEER INFORMATION SHEET

April 23, 2018 is William Shakespeare’s 454th birthday. To celebrate, Delaware Shakespeare would like to present every single play Shakespeare ever wrote in the course of one hour, at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, on Saturday, April 21.

So we could use some help!

In partnership with Clear Space Theatre Company and the City of Rehoboth Beach, we aim to have about 20-30 seconds of dialogue from every Shakespeare play performed in a whirlwind fashion on “Shakespeare Day“ – a fun, light-hearted event that honors the dizzying diversity of Shakespeare’s writing and the collaborative spirit of Sussex County residents. We hope to find volunteers from a wide cross-section of the community – from the government, arts, education, and business sectors – to step up to the mic for their 15 seconds of Shakespeare glory. Would you join us?

Participants in past Shakespeare Days

You’d be assigned a brief piece of text from a Shakespeare play (don’t worry, you don’t have to memorize it!). Some of these will be read solo, some will be a piece of dialogue to be read in tandem with another awesome volunteer. Delaware Shakespeare will hold a “drop-in” rehearsal at Clear Space on Friday, April 20 (10am-4pm), when you can stop in at your leisure for 5-10 minutes to go over your dialogue and be briefed on the logistics. Then, all you need to do is show up on April 21 to take part in the fun. (Time commitment would be roughly 12:45pm-2pm.)

If you live in the Rehoboth Beach area, we’d love to have you as part of this celebration. If you are interested, CLICK HERE to download the “Volunteer Information” sheet and email the completed form (or email the information requested on the sheet) to info@delshakes.org.

Black Lives Matter

View “Anti-Racism Next Steps” Shakespeare is not a voice we naturally turn to for racial justice. There are elements of his work that are problematic for Black artists and audience members. But at his best what Shakespeare tries to do in his plays is to see every person as a full and complete human being. […]
