As our “Kate Speaks” crowdfunding campaign draws to a close, we want to talk with you about why this campaign is so important to us, and what we hope will come from it.
As we approach this summer’s production of The Taming of the Shrew, director Samantha Bellomo has spent many hours thinking about what the play means to modern audiences:
“Ultimately, for me, it is about change. Shifting hierarchies, changing places, pushing against confining frames. What if all we took to be true CAN change? How exciting to think that there are endless possibilities – if we only expand our thinking. The given circumstances can be re-thought! We can make anything happen.”
Kate is full of spirit, full of life, and full of fight. She rails against a society that would keep her quiet, gives voice to her discoveries, and learns that change from within is possible – both for herself, and for the society she lives in. These are the stories we’re looking to capture from people throughout Delaware – high school students, businesspeople, adult learners, and others who have struggled with societal expectations, succeeded in changing minds, and learned about themselves in the process. We all share a little of Kate’s experience; some of us share a lot. We’re eager to listen in as Kate Speaks from inside all of us.
Thanks to a grant from the Delaware Humanities Forum and pledges from other organizations that believe in “Kate Speaks,” we’re about halfway to our fundraising goal! If you’re able, we’d appreciate your support in these final days of the campaign, which ends on March 15 (the Ides of March!). Thank you!
