After the first week of rehearsals, Ife Foy (DSF’s Tranio) shared a few thoughts about where she is in the process of creating her role.
Upon completing the first week of rehearsal for The Taming of the Shrew, I am not only excited, but terrified! Before rehearsal began, I had the sense that Tranio drove a great deal of the action within the play. However, I didn’t know what that would require of me as the actor. Tranio transforms from servant to lord in a matter of scenes and never seems to stumble after he makes this huge transformation. It is as though he’s been waiting to play a lord his entire life.
At first, I thought Tranio was extremely manipulating, but upon more open consideration, I’ve found he’s actually good-natured. That discovery then lead me to ask what Tranio has to gain. Few characters in plays go to great lengths for others simply out of the goodness of their hearts.
I’m looking forward to discovering (throughout the rest of rehearsal and performances) why Tranio goes to such great lengths to accomplish the task he’s been assigned and just how meticulously he strums the strings of others to get what he wants.
