Potential directors are identified by the Producing Artistic Director and the Artistic Squad. Directors are selected approximately 9-12 months before rehearsals begin.
Design teams are put together via a collaborative discussion between the production’s director, the Artistic Squad, and the Producing Artistic Director. Design teams are selected approximately 6 months before rehearsals begin.

In a typical year, Del Shakes holds open auditions in early-to-mid January, after the main production season is announced. Auditions are posted on our website, via Facebook, and typically via the Theatre Philadelphia Google group and job page. Actors are able to send in headshots and resumes for consideration for audition appointments. After the open auditions, production-specific auditions are scheduled January-March. Actors invited to production-specific auditions are a combinations of actors seen at the open auditions and actors identified by the production director, the Artistic Squad, and the Producing Artistic Director. All actors who attend production-specific auditions are informed of casting decisions once casting is complete.
From time to time, Del Shakes also produces play readings and other limited run events. These programs are normally cast via direct offer, from the talent pool seen at yearly open auditions and actors who have previously worked with Del Shakes.
For its two annual full productions, Del Shakes is able to hire a limited number of Actors’ Equity Association members via a Guest Artist contract. The majority of actors are non-Equity performers.
Del Shakes prioritizes working with artists from the greater Wilmington-Philadelphia region.
