In connection with our 2016 summer production of The Comedy of Errors, Delaware Shakespeare explored “Our America, Our Shakespeare / Nuestra América, Nuestro Shakespeare.”
The Comedy of Errors is a play about the confusion three newcomers experience upon their arrival in a foreign land. Delaware Shakespeare Festival collaborated with the Latin American Community Center on a eight-week playwriting workshop in which members of the Latino immigrant community wrote scenes and monologues that reflected various aspects of their experience arriving in America, inspired by key moments in The Comedy of Errors as well as by artwork in the “Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art” exhibit at Delaware Art Museum. These scenes and monologues were read by participants at a community sharing at Delaware Art Museum on May 21, 2016.
Erlina Ortiz, resident playwright at Philadelphia’s Power Street Theatre Company, lead the weekly writing workshops and directed the final community sharing.
